    Abstract

Transplant medicine holds out the potential of therapy - even cure - for a number of diseases and disease conditions, using techniques which encompass solid organ or cellular transplants. This paper is concerned primarily with solid organ transplants, as these can be described as the "Holy grail" of xenotransplantation research. However, significant energy is being invested in cellular transplantation and this too will be considered. The paper begins with an assessment of the current situation in respect of organ transplantation in the United Kingdom.
