Abstract
The Advanced Static VAr Compensator (ASVC) is one of the Flexible A.C. Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices that may be used to support system voltage and help in damping power oscillation. The speed of response of the ASVC is sensitive to the system Short Circuit Level (SCL). The higher the SCL the slower is the speed of response and vice versa. The research presented in this paper investigates the influence of system fault level on the ASVC speed of response. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is used to control the ASVC output voltage in order to generate or absorb the required reactive power. In this work, the use of three types of controllers to implement the PWM parameters is analysed. These controllers are the conventional PI controller, the Fuzzy mimics PI controller and Model Reference Adaptive Controller (MRAC). The results obtained show that the PI controller is sensitive to changes in the system fault level. The Fuzzy-PI controller gives better response as compared with the PI controller. The MRAC with a proper choice of the reference model is shown to give the best response and less dependency on the system short circuit level.
