Abstract
The issues associated with transition to first year at university, and strategies to address these, were investigated within the context of diversity and a mass HE system. A substantial literature review of international research was undertaken which enabled the identification of key features of transition support and examples of effective and innovative practice. The outcomes of the literature review formed the basis of a series of interviews with practitioners and policy-makers within the Scottish HE sector. Through an approach which synthesised the issues, ideas and approaches at an international level and those which were identified within the Scottish HE sector, Whittaker has drawn firm conclusions regarding effective transition support and clear recommendations to enhance the engagement and empowerment of students in the first year. The report is a key resource for the Scottish HE sector in terms of informing strategic development in improving progression and enhancing the student experience.
