The implications of environmental conflict in the oil and gas activities in the oil producing nations of the Global South

Abstract

This paper focuses on the implications of environmental conflict resulting from oil and gas activities in the oil producing nation of the Global South using the Nigerian Niger Delta as a case study. The Environmental conflict (EC) has various implications played by the Oil and Gas Activities (O&GA) of the Global South (GS) nation. The Oil and Gas activities have provided basics amenities such as hospital, employment, good road, etc. Among other aspects are the issue of environmental degradation caused by overexploitation of natural resources, infrastructure decay, etc. which has deprived the host communities from their usual day to day activities. Issues such as abject poverty, unemployment, unequal distribution of resources, and many more was identified as the outcome from the oil and gas activities. As a result of this led to the escalation of environmental conflict in the Global South nation. Over year, approaches used to resolve these conflicts are the quick fix which fails to capture the underlying causes of the problem recurring. The paper intends to adopt an approach that is capable of addressing the complexity of oil-related conflict over time existing in the Global South nation using Systems thinking and System dynamic methodology.
