Abstract
Groundwater protection is managed in England and Wales by the Environment Agency. This review considers previous measures, evolution of the present policy on groundwater protection, and the extent and nature of the groundwater pollution. The effectiveness of the present system is assessed and critically appraised by considering case studies. The difficulties associated with implementing current strategies and deficiencies in the current regulatory arrangements are highlighted. The final analysis suggests improved pollution prevention measures and stricter control of chemical storage, movement and use. Recommendations are made for further enhancement of the groundwater protection policy in the context of integrated monitoring and control of environmental pollution.
