Abstract
Many local education authorities are currently rationalising the institutional structure of sixth-form provision in their areas. This paper provides a brief review of the educational options available but its main emphasis is on the costs of rationalisation. The restructuring of sixth-form provision will have cost implications for the other parts of the educational system providing secondary and post 16 education. Hence the option which minimises sixth-form costs may cause an off-setting rise in costs in other areas, e.g. in 11 to 16 education. Such costs are examined by taking two case studies, namely Manchester and Newcastle Upon Tyne.
