Effective management of natural environment relies on acquiring accurate and detailed information in a timely manner. The acquisition of relevant data from remote locations has become viable due to recent technological advancements in sensors and communications technology. The declining costs and miniaturisation of electronics and sensors have resulted in application of digital technologies to new areas for measurements and sensing. There is considerable research and interest to develop applications requiring remote access to both scalar and image data. WiSE (Wireless Internet Sensing Environmnet) project is a multi-disciplinary activity funded by the RCUK dot.rural digital economy hub. The project is developing a digital platform for remote Internet-enabled monitoring of the environment.This paper describes the application of sensors for environmental monitoring. The sensor based architecture supports remote monitoring of an area using sensors and cameras and is both deployable and accessible from any place on earth. The developed infrastructure is generic and can be employed equally well for security and asset monitoring.
