Abstract
This paper presents research aimed at developing a three dimensional (3D) buried assets locating system based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. RFID is employed to improve the locating of underground infrastructure. Problems facing the utility companies are highlighted and discussed. Within the paper, differences between system performance in real conditions and ideal conditions will be examined. Other factors, which may affect the overall performance characteristics of the system, such as RF tag type, antennae, and soil conditions will also be analysed and discussed.
