Abstract
Following the critical success of Peter Watkins’ Edvard Munch (NRK/ SR, 1973), a biographical film which examined the life and work of the famous Norwegian expressionist painter, the Swedish Film Institute picked up on Watkins’ prior interest in the subject and in November 1978 approached the director with a view to developing a similar project based upon the life of August Strindberg, the Swedish playwright who had actually appeared as a character in the Munch film.
