Recently, the layered (α-NaFeO2 type) lithium manganese oxide LiMnO2 was prepared by ion-exchange from the corresponding sodium phase (1). Subsequent neutron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy studies have shown that there is a coexistence of layered and spinel phases after galvanostatic cycling (2). The amount of spinel increases with repeated cycling. In order to try and stabilise the layered structure, substitution of some of the Mn by Co has been investigated by a variety of techniques including slow sweep cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic cycling and powder X-ray and neutron diffraction structural studies on as-prepared and cycled samples (3).
