Abstract
In public MONEY, June 1984, Stephen Bailey and Justin Meadows examined the spending patterns of five metropolitan authorities, including Newcastle, since 1950/51 and concluded that their ranking over the period was not out of line with the Government’s assessments for grant distribution purposes today. In the following issue Geoff Norris argued that those conclusions are false, at least where Newcastle is concerned. Stephen Bailey now adds a rejoinder.
