This note (Devine 2006, pp.420-421) demonstrates the passion and drama of the Highland Clearances and the power accompanying land ownership. The causes of the Clearances, which range from the (perhaps inevitable) migration associated with a growing population to the deliberately cruel acts of landowners and their factors, are a matter of historical debate (Lynch 1993; Donnachie and Hewitt 2007).
