Abstract

Turkey is the world's largest hazelnut producer and exporter. However, hazelnut producers are producing in increasingly challenging conditions, even if some years have been good for their crops or crops. In this article, we will discuss the contradictions of hazelnut production in Turkey. Contrary to the general acceptance that hazelnut enterprises are small at the source of the problems, we will try to show that the problem is mainly due to unequal power relations in the hazelnut market. Based on the findings of some of the data of our field survey in the Eastern and Western Black Sea Regions in 2017, we reveal the following arguments. Hazelnut farming in small businesses in Turkey has problems with efficiency and profitability. Most hazelnut producers are unable to make the necessary expenditures and investments for productivity increases. These problems are due to the demographic profile of hazelnut producers, the unequal structure in the borrowing and hazelnut market, rather than the small production units. Therefore, it may be more appropriate to make changes in favor of the producer in the global market dominated by unequal power relations rather than growing the production scale to solve the problems in hazelnut production.
