Abstract
Primarily aimed at undergraduates studying history, sports studies, or sports history, this unit is broken down into eight key lessons. This unit introduces students to the academic study of sport history before moving on to explore key aspects of the development of modern organized sport. It breaks down the subject into eight sections which can be studied in order or randomized, with the exception of Lesson One which introduces the main approaches to the study of sports history.
The unit is organized around a series of key themes to enable students to develop more in-depth knowledge of sport history. It looks at key events, concepts, and developments which underpin the study of sport history and give insights in to the current challenges facing sport. Some of these concepts run across several lessons, such as ideas around identity, gender, and class. The lessons are linked to academic literature but are also underpinned by opportunities to explore primary sources and multimedia resources to enhance understanding of the concepts.
