Abstract

This chapter investigates green product design towards corporate sustainability. The research adopted a qualitative research design. A survey of previous research on green business from respectable publications is done for this chapter. The study established that competition in the manufacturing sector has brought about a fundamental shift in the concept of product design. One of the significant impacts is the integration of the product life cycle into the design process, encompassing all stages from the initial concept design to the product's end-of-life, including design, development, production, supply, use, and eventual recycling or disposal, ensuring that the product meets green standards. The task of life cycle design is to consider all aspects of the product's life cycle and strive for optimal resource utilization while minimizing or eliminating environmental pollution. Achieving rapid development solely through market forces is deemed impossible from a disciplinary and incentive standpoint. Government intervention, environmental laws, and R&D tax incentives are necessary to promote green product creation. Stakeholder engagement, consumer behavior, and the interplay between green marketing and consumer purchasing behavior play a crucial role in driving the success of green product development. It has been observed that design thinking can facilitate greater stakeholder involvement in Green Product Development (GPD). Moreover, when a majority of individuals purchase green toys, their inclination to buy such toys further increases. This suggests that users exhibit ecological consciousness and concern for environmental protection, or that emerging economic trends and childhood education influence the purchase of green toys. Based on previous literature research, it has been found that green product innovation offers several benefits to firms. Firstly, it reduces the negative environmental impact of firms by minimizing waste and costs, thus improving their profitability.
