Abstract

Book abstract: Chronicling Scotland's past, this document traces the movement of the Scottish people from rural to urban environments during the 18th and 19th centuries and the subsequent changes in labor from predominantly agricultural to industrial. This thorough record also considers the individual lives of those engaged in providing services such as feeding, housing, and protecting the population as well as ensuring its health. The importance of public service is discussed, as is the industrial way of life and the ways in which workers had to cooperate in the interest of their employer, themselves, and society.
