Description
The Moffat Centre is pleased to submit this proposal to fulfil The Ambassador Theatre Group's requirement for the measurement of the impact of King’s Theatre, Glasgow by the theatres’ visitors on the City and region economy.
In brief, the King’s Theatre is planning some significant redevelopment work in spring 2027 for which they will need to raise funds. The proposition to potential funders needs to illustrate the geographical spread of existing consumers and the financial impact that those who purchase tickets and visits make on the city’s and the region’s economy. Once the King’s has been redeveloped it is believed that they will be able to attract and successfully accommodate some of the largest touring productions. Currently, these large-scale tours bypass Glasgow and tend to play either The Festival Theatre or The Playhouse in Edinburgh. With that in mind, theatre management is keen to consult with people who have either booked to see a large-scale musical in Glasgow e.g. Les Miserables at the Theatre Royal or similar titles that have played at other ATG theatres. It is assumed that larger-scale productions attract people from a wider geographical area and that their value to the local economy is greater. Accordingly, such growth for the King’s Theatre and its productions would be positive for the city and the region.
The aims of the project are recognised as being in two phases and are identified and recognised by the Moffat Centre as:
• Phase 1
o To calculate the Economic Impact to Glasgow City and Greater Glasgow of the King’s Theatre, Glasgow from theatre clients.
• Phase 2
o Through secondary research determine the motivations of theatre patrons to travel further to attend larger-scale productions if the capacity of theatres can accommodate them.
It is acknowledged that the purpose of commissioning this work is to support The Ambassador Theatre Group's, partners, and stakeholders in their strategy and planning.
Timescales for delivery are for the commission to start as soon as possible with a deliverable required by the end of May 2024.
