Research interests

Dr. Ibrahim Beklan Kucukdemiral is a Reader in the Department of Applied Science at the School of Computing, Engineering, and Built Environment at Glasgow Caledonian University. He holds the title of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in the UK and is a member of IFAC, as well as a senior member of IEEE. Currently, he is serving as the Vice Chair of the IEEE Control Systems Chapter of the UK & Ireland Section, and he also holds the position of Conference Coordinator Officer for the IEEE UK & Ireland Section. Additionally, Dr. Kucukdemiral chairs the Industrial Advisory Board of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering departments within the school and leading the Robotics for the Common Good research group.

Dr. Kucukdemiral earned his BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Yildiz Technical University in 1997, 1999, and 2002, respectively. He worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant at YTU from 1998 to 2004 and subsequently held positions as an Assistant Professor (2004-2010), Associate Professor (2010-2015), and Full Professor (2015-2017) at the same university. He played a key role in establishing the new Control and Automation Engineering department within the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at YTU.

Dr. Kucukdemiral's research interests encompass a wide range of topics, including robust, optimal, and adaptive control systems, embedded systems, electronic circuits and devices, mechatronics, digital wireless communication systems, data acquisition measurement, sensor technologies, and some automotive applications of control theory. He is a member of the editorial board of Ocean Engineering and the Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (SCI-E) and serves as the module leader for several modules, including Industrial Practice, Control Systems I, Control Systems II, Model Predictive Control, and Control & Instrumentation Systems at the African Leadership College in Mauritius. Over the years, he has taught approximately 20 different modules at both graduate and undergraduate levels at various universities, including Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul, Glasgow Caledonian University in Glasgow, the Turkish Airforce Academy in Istanbul, and the University of Sharjah in the UAE.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Kucukdemiral has been actively involved in numerous research projects in Turkey and the UK, including the EPSRC research project ROBMAN, which focused on the Robust Robotic Manipulation of Physical Structures Underwater. This project brought together GCU, Heriot-Watt University, and i-Tech 7, a subsidiary of SubSea-7. Dr. Kucukdemiral has also supervised the completion of 5 PhD students and has provided consultation and review services for various industrial and academic projects, including EUREKA EUROSTARS and TUBITAK. He holds a membership in the EPSRC Peer Review College and serves as an external examiner for several universities in England.
