Title: Do engineers need academic qualifications? Envisioning a workplace-focused engineering education model: catalyst for reflecting on our current practices.Abstract: Learning in the workplace has seen a recent resurgence in engineering, raising the interesting question of “what is the right balance between professional and academic achievement?” In engineering programmes over the last 50 years the balance in engineering programmes has swung between theory and workplace. Moreover, lifelong learning and ongoing
Continuing Professional Development requirements for practicing engineers to maintain their currency, meaning learning and education is taking place through a range of providers. So, in a provocation to encourage attendees to reconsider tertiary-level engineering education, the question to be explored in this workshops is “What would a purely workplace engineering education look like?” The workshop will use an Appreciative Inquiry approach, as it is a positive approach to change and information sharing. Firstly, attendees will be able to share positive perspectives of workplace learning – in pairs then in wider groups – before secondly, dreaming and envisioning what a workplace-focused engineering education would look like. These envisioned futures will act as a catalyst for reflection on what this means for what we are currently doing, as well as what we could and should be doing.
