Research interests

In summary my research interests and areas of expertise (over the past 30 years) are based on the development and application of analytical chemistry to clinical/biological and environmental/forensic problems.  I have considerable experience in GC-MS, LC-MS and related chromatographic/spectrometric techniques.  The main areas are described below:

•    Trace analysis of drugs, biogenic and xenobiotic metabolites in human body fluids and pharmaceutical/drug formulations.

•    Analysis of environmental pollutants (e.g. VOCs, dust, inorganics) in the atmosphere (indoor and outdoor).

•    Pesticide residue, dioxin/PCB and assorted micro-pollutant (e.g. pharmaceuticals) analyses in environmental matrices such as water, soil and the biosphere.

Current Projects

1      noPILLS (EU, INERREG) (Pharmaceutical Input and Elimination from Local Sources).  This is the analysis of pharmaceuticals from waste water and ground waters.

2      Biomarkers in human neurological disease, with St. Georges Hospital, University of London.

3      Also collaboration with the University of Bristol (~£3K):  LC-MS analysis of morphine and metabolites in the study of alcohol related addiction studies in mice.

4      Just finished:-BATFARM (EU, INTERREG) (Best available technology farm).  This is to monitor emissions from a typical pastoral farm.
